Factors Affecting Speed
The following factors affect thread speed:
- Workpiece material & hardness
- Type and size of thread
- Type and size of thread mill selected
- Method of coolant application
- Thread finish required
- Depth of cut to be taken
- Rigidity of workpiece set-up
- Machine tool size, power & rigidity
- Safety aspects of the set-up
Use Lower Speeds Ranges for:
- Heat treated materials
- Exotic materials
- Abrasive materials
- Maximum cutter life
Use Higher Speed Ranges for:
- Softer Materials
- Better Finishes
- Smaller diameter cutters
- Frail workpieces or set-ups
- Maximum production rates
